His main early influence was Lester Young, but he grew to influence generations of players himself and never stopped evolving as a musician.
Getz was an extraordinary improviser who created a distinctive sound and vocabulary. Getz's solos managed to meld lush romanticism with jazz's sense of physical toughness. He preferred ballads and medium-tempo tunes, though he was equally gifted at performing uptempo numbers. His emotional solos communicated directly and simply, revealing a canny yet innate logic.
Getz recorded over albums during his lifetime, and several are considered jazz classics: Stan Getz Plays in , Focus from with arranger and composer Eddie Sauter, and Jazz Samba from with guitarist Charlie Byrd, which brought Brazil's bossa nova to American shores.
During the late '60s and the '70s, his playing became more athletic: Sweet Rain in , Change of Scenes with the Clarke-Boland Big Band in , and Captain Marvel in offered excellent examples of his bona fides in progressive jazz and fusion. Getz's final album, People Time, was a live double-length duo set with pianist Kenny Barron.
But as soon as he picked up that saxophone, the demons instantly vanished. Despite all the baggage, though, Getz's gorgeous tone and sprawling discography remain his overwhelming legacy. Stanley had a beautiful sound. He had such a wonderful sound. Jazz Weekly, June 10, , George W. Would you turn away from finding a book of undiscovered movies of Rita Hayworth or Ava Gardner?
Next Question! Up there with Rossini, Mozart, Ellington and Montgomery, he had a sound that simply affirms the joy of existence. Harris, Jazz Weekly. Stan Getz returned to the United States in January after three years in Europe, brimming with musical ingenuity. Three weeks earlier, John Coltrane had played an explosive stand at the Village Vanguard. Coltrane's label would milk that week's recordings for decades.
Then the New Yorker ran a big story announcing the eagerly awaited return of tenor colossus Sonny Rollins after a two-year break. Those guys were Getz's contemporaries, but since he'd started recording earlier, at a time when things were changing fast, next to them, he could now seem old-fashioned. At the gate, Stan Getz pushed back against that idea. It's hard to overstate what a terrific tenor saxophonist Stan Getz was and is because there's nothing dated about his style.
He had a light, gorgeous tone that might convey great tenderness. While the recording quality of these broadcasts is not flawless, it is decent and the beauty of Getz's luscious tone comes through.
He alternates uptempo material with ballads, sounding beautiful and creative throughout. What weve got here is an extremely rare pair of concerts from November of in NYC, when Getz had just returned from his 2 year European exile.
Getz sounds like hes got something to prove on fiery, frenetic and frantic takes of Airgin and Woodyn You. A pair of ballads like Autumn Leaves and Yesterdays Gardenias show the lighter side. The ONLY caveat on this essential disc is that the recording on the first four songs are a bit rough on the lower end bass and bass drum making the sound quality a bit of a test at times. For Getz freaks, its a bridge worth crossing.
